Happy Days for Gould and Gosar!

by: Mary Desio

Paul Babeu is NOT unfit to hold office because he is gay. He IS unfit to hold office because he is a proven liar and hypocrite, because he has corrupted the Sheriff's Department by bringing in political cronies and bad cops from other cities, because he has grossly mismanaged his budget, because he has deliberately spread fear and hatred in order to further his own political ambitions, and because he has taken the salary of a full-time sheriff while spending most of his time campaigning for other candidates and promoting himself rather than doing the job he was elected to do.

But will all that finish him off? Nope. What will bring him down is that he's a gay Republican. We don't yet know if the actual charges against him (if any) will prove to be true or not. But we do know there's a lot more out there to be dug up, and dug up it will be. So his opponents in the upcoming Republican Congressional primary have reason to celebrate. The sheriff is toast.

He's trying to tough it out right now, but can you think of a worse time for this to happen?  All his "supporters" are standing with him (well, not Romney) and saying wonderful, understanding things about how his private life doesn't matter to them. Maybe that would have worked about a decade ago, when there were still reasonable Republicans with humanity and moderation. But not now!  The Republican party has jumped so rapidly off the right-wing cliff that all we can do is shake our heads in wonder. As the country moves ever closer to widespread acceptance of same-sex marriage, they are reacting by digging in deeper every day. No national Republican dares even HINT at approval, if they value their careers.  Now Babeu is going to make the case that he really, really, really is a staunch Conservative - except for that one little thing. He said, "For any other person to define somebody else's relationship and say it's not OK, that is not who we are as Americans." But the fact is that that is EXACTLY who we are as Republicans. (Or rather, who they are, not me). Have you listened to Santorum, the latest Republican frontrunner for President?

So Gould and Gosar have already issued statements about what a bad thing this is, and how sad they are to have to say so. (It's all about bad judgement!). Now the money from all those "patriot" groups around the country will start drying up. Watch the polls in the new CD 4. And watch the local Republicans start falling away, one after the other – and for all the wrong reasons.

Bye, Sheriff Paul.

I was born and raised on the Iron Range in northern Minnesota, spent two years in the United States Navy, and then went back home to raise my kids.  In Minnesota at that time, especially on the Range, all the “regular” people were Democrats. The Republicans were the big bosses in the mines, the town banker, and anyone who had just a little more money than their neighbors – or wanted their neighbors to think they did! I became more and more politically aware as I aged (and boy, have I aged!) but was never particularly active. That changed for me when George Bush was elected for the second time. Since then I’ve become a political news junkie, a volunteer, and an activist.  My husband Vince is still part of the corporate world, which is fortunate for me, as he can support my little hobby. Both of my adult children now live in Arizona. Sadly, I have no grandchildren, and all the nagging in the world doesn’t seem to help. But I do have grandcats!

I’d like to talk about local politics, county, state and national politics, and pretty much anything else that comes to mind. I do have a slight tendency toward sarcasm, (once or twice I’ve been called a smart a….leck) but I hope I can provide some interesting – and entertaining – commentary. I’ll certainly try.

By the way, I have a Facebook account that I seldom use, and a Twitter account that I NEVER use. So far, I have stuck by my refusal to Twitt, Tweet, or coo like a pigeon.
