New Restaurant Opens Its Doors in San Tan Valley

A restaurant, once well known in Metro Phoenix in the 70s, has reopened after thirty years ... and they chose to open in San Tan Valley.

In 1972, Katherine and Thomas X Smith III, moved to Arizona and opened the first Golden Skone, a restaurant known for its fry bread dough.  Smith had worked for years to create the perfect type of bread for a sandwich.  He finally perfected the recipe creating a dough with a soft and fluffy texture inside, crisp and golden on the outside, able to fry up evenly, while still being strong enough to hold fillings. Eventually, Smith had five stores located in Scottsdale, Mesa and Phoenix but due to some unfortunate disagreements amongst partners,  all of the stores closed down by the late 70s.  While others had tried to duplicate Smith's skones, none were successful.  Smith passed away in 2017, with his secret recipe wrapped up tight.

In 2020, Tom's son Dennis and his wife, Stacy, decided to bring the original golden skone bread back. The Original Golden Skone opened its doors February 3, 2020, on the northeast corner of Ironwood and Ocotillo in San Tan Valley, AZ.

While the restaurant didn't open until 11:00am, Susan and Connie were waiting outside at 9:30am.  Having spent many a day at the Mesa location off of Country Club as teeanagers, the idea of being able to enjoy their favorite dishes again was almost too much to bear.  When the doors officially opened, Connie and Susan ordered the same items they used to order as kids and anxiously waited for their meals to be delivered to them.  Their excitement was clear to see and the first bite for each brought back those childhood memories with a smile.

The Original Golden Skone offers a simple menu of eight sandwiches averaging about $8 per sandwich. They also have a few sides and of course some fry bread desserts.  Open Monday - Saturday from 11am-8:30pm. The Original Golden Skone is closed on Sundays.
